The Great Gift of Ghee: Ghee Recipe by Chitra Martin
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (16 oz) unsalted organic butter (preferably grass-fed)
Instructions:
- Place butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over low heat.
- Melt slowly, allowing it to simmer gently. Foam will rise to the top.
- Skim off the foam as it forms.
- Continue simmering until the milk solids separate and settle at the bottom (about 15–20 min). The ghee should be golden and fragrant.
- Remove from heat. Carefully pour the clear liquid through a fine strainer or cheesecloth into a glass jar, leaving solids behind.
- Let cool and store with the lid on. No refrigeration needed.
Chitra’s Note: Use ghee not only in cooking, but as a sacred healing oil—massage the soles of your feet, stir into warm herbal tonics, or blend into your chai as a gesture of nourishment and grounding. Spread on toast or melt into grains.
Why Ghee Is Sacred Ghee is more than clarified butter—it is a golden, grounding balm for digestion, skin, joints, and spirit. On my upswing days, I prepare ghee not just for nourishment, but as a loving offering to my future self.
- Supports brain, joint, and nervous system health
- Aids digestion and gut lining repair
- High in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
- Balancing for Vata—grounding, warming, and strengthening
- Can be used for cooking or external massage (especially feet at bedtime)
Ghee is a carrier of love, light, and nourishment, a sattvic food that supports clarity, immunity, and emotional steadiness.
Although, I enjoy making ghee anytime, typically with meditation or kirtan music, there is a wonderful Full Moon practice that I’d encourage.
In the book the Path of Practice: A Woman’s Book of Healing with Food, Breath and Sound, Bri Maya, Tiwari states that according to Vedic Tradition, Ghee is made during the Full Moon (Purnima), it is a Sadhana (Practice) of silence, a once a month peaceful practice, allowing the rainstick sounds of the bubbling ghee, the rich nutty aroma and the golden sun color evoke a sense of wellness, and tranquility.
